Saltwater Fishing Equipment

Saltwater Fishing RodsI heard the ziiiiiiing as the line peeled off my reel.  I quickly ran to grab the fishing rod. It was one my first times fishing in the ocean and I could hardly wait to see what I had caught.  We had been trolling with surface lures for some time and now I had my “big strike”.

I picked up the pole and started to reel in the line.  Suddenly I realized my line was no longer touching the water.  In fact, it was going way up in the air.  To my amazement, I had caught my first Seagull.  I hollered “hey”.  The Seagull continued flying beside the boat with the lure in his claws.  I was trying to figure out how to get out of this.  But suddenly the Seagull let loose and flew off screeching at the top of his lungs!

I stood there dumbfounded while everyone on the boat laughed.  Just great!

Since that day I’ve got to enjoy many hours on the ocean but unfortunately most of them were not fishing.  I worked for a fish locator company that did navigation instruments as well. .So mostly I’ve just got to work on the ocean not have fun on the Ocean.  But “sometimes” we would sneak in some fishing!

But over the years I’ve caught barracuda, tuna, and numerous other species of fish.  Each one has been a thrill.

Some things that I have learned you will need when fishing on the ocean:

  • Have plenty of fresh water
  • Have plenty sunscreen, appropriate hats etc.Saltwater Lures
  • Have plenty of low-fat snacks (high-fat meals can contribute to seasickness)
  • Have plenty of non-alcoholic drinks available
  • Have plenty of top quality fishing tackle
    • Several high-quality saltwater fishing rods
    • Several high-quality saltwater fishing reels
    • Numerous saltwater fishing lures
    • Inspected or new fishing line
  • Nets and gaffs to bring in the fish
  • Cameras to document the catch
  • Have a sonar system for depth and fishlocating
  • Have a GPS Mapping system so you know where you are
  • Have a compass and a map so you know where you are if power fails.
  • Have flashlights in case power fails.
  • Have a toolkit
  • Have foul weather gear
  • Have at least one radio preferably two.  One ship mounted and one portable.  At least you can call for help.  Cell phones don’t usually work where you are going!
  • Have twin engines so when one dies you don’t immediately need the radios.
  • Do I have to mention full tanks of gas?

The above list is just a quick list of some of the items you should have when heading out to sea in a small fishing boat.  I recommend making a list and improving it each time you go.

Here at TheFishCamp.org we have a generous selection of quality saltwater fishing rods, saltwater fishing reels and lures, all available at great prices.
