Why do you Think they Call them Wahoo !
Wahoo's are somewhat plentiful in the Florida keys in the cooler weather. They are a highly targeted sport fish because, they are big ,but not to big, often found not far offshore ,very good to eat,and very good fighters with great power in the initial runs. They are amazingly colorful with an iridescent blue back, silvery sides, and when excited, flashing blue bars on the sides.
Although most Wahoos caught in the Florida keys are 30 to 60 lbs.,they have been recorded up to 8 ft. and 180 lbs. With a elongated, torpedo shaped body, they are one of the faster fish that swim the oceans and have been clocked at speeds up to 50 mph.
Wahoo are related to the king mackerel and look simular in appearance, you can tell them apart by a fold of skin covering the mandible when the mouth is closed, and have smaller teeth closer together.Being a true game fish they are very good to eat.The wahoo is all white meat very delicate and sought after by restaurants .In fact the Hawaiian name for the fish is Ono,which means ,tasty or delicious, in Hawaiian.
Wahoo are not known to be a tightly schooling fish ,they are usually found in groups of two or three fish, but when conditions are favorable can be found in schools as large as 100 or more. They feed on pelagic forage fish and squid. Not being a tightly schooling fish such as Tunas,Wahoo's have not been targeted by commercial fishing fleets, but taken more by commercial fisherman trolling who sell-off their catch.Reports are that Wahoo are not overfished, and that is debateable. This same agency says that Menhaden aren't overfished either ?????
To catch these tasty speed demons trolling will be the way to go.You will want to target wrecks and reefs in 100 to 250 feet of water in the Florida Keys.Troll in a zig-zag pattern and speed is a rather quick for trolling at 7 to 10 mph. Many captains use a combination of artificials and fresh baits like a large Ballhoo or Mullet.Trolling should be down deep with an artificial such as a red and black or blue and white Ilander on a planner board,or a silver drone spoon on a smaller board. On another combo put a large ballhoo or mullet double rigged farther out in the spread,to cover all your bases.Although Wahoo like to feed below the surface, they will hit a surface plugs on occasion,so try a few different combos.
Deep diving plugs have gained popularity lately and require no boards and outriggers.A 10 ft. piece of wire is all that is required to prevent cutoffs, and the simplicity of the set-up is getting some amazing results.<!--end paragraph--><!--end paragraph-->
<!--end paragraph-->The large lipped models such as the Rebel Jawbreaker,Magnum Countdown,MirrOlure 113,along with lipless plugs like Halco Giant Trembler,Yo-Zuri Bonita, and the Boone's Cairns.

<!--end paragraph--> So why do you think they call them Wahoo, because when you catch one they will hear you back at the dock yelling….. WaaaHoooo !!!!<!--end paragraph--><!--end paragraph-->
