Andrew Martinsen's Walleye Fishing Secrets for Trolling Weed Beds

In my opinion, THIS is where it’s at when Walleye fishing: Weed Bed Trolling.
I just don’t think it can get any better than fishin weedbeds on a river on a Summer afternoon, do you?
When it comes to fishing for Walleye, weeds can be the place to be, but many anglers avoid weed beds because of the frustrations and aggravations that can come with fishing in the weeds.
Snags, getting stuck, and replacing tackle are what many anglers expect when fishing the weeds but this does not have to be the case if you know and use advanced weed bed trolling techniques.
One technique that top pro anglers use with regularity is to locate weed beds which are also close to underwater structure.
Another ideal situation for great Walleye fishing is when the weeds are located near the edge of a drop off.
Both of the scenarios allow the Walleye to dart back and forth.
Both of the scenarios above are perfect for you catching more Walleye.
Using a spoon while trolling these areas can be quite effective too.
Trollling back and forth, between the weed edges and the structure or depth change can be extremely effective, adjusting your speed and changing lures as often as necessary to pinpoint exactly what the fish want in the specific conditions present.
One technique that many pro Walleye anglers use is to use a ball head jig, one that is between one fourth and one half ounce, and work the edges of the weeds, right on the outside.
This will allow you to remove weeds instead of getting snagged on them.
Cast and then let the jig sink, and when it hits the bottom pop it back up with a firm upward jerk.
Continue this method along the edges, and any open areas inside the weeds as well.
Using minnow or shad lures, or twister tail grubs, works well with this technique.
Deep diving crankbaits can also work well in this situation.
Once you are ready to move in from the edges and get right in the weeds, switch to shallow diving floating baits, like minnow baits, which will glide through the weeds easier without getting snagged or caught up.
