What does the knob on the left of the fishing reel, Abu Garcia Silver Max, do?
I just bought this reel as a combination with a rod and it didn't come with a manual. I really need to know what this knob does because it can really affect my fishing. In case you don't know what knob I'm talking about, it's the one that has the word "Max" on one side and a dot on the other.
That's the knob that controls the magnetic spool brake on the reel. It's designed to help prevent backlashes (birdsnests) by slowing the spool down as you cast. The higher the setting the faster the spool slows. The "max" in this case means maximum brakes. It will also limit your casting distance slightly.
You'll need to use it a while to find what setting is best for you, based on your skill and the weight of the lures you are using. As you get more comfortable with the reel, you'll find you can turn it down quite a lot to get longer casts.
