All about Fluid Bearings
When mentioning bearings, most of you may relate them with the steel or ceramic bearings. But except for those common bearings which we can see in our daily life, there are also many special ones like fluid bearings which we are not very familiar with. Have you ever heard of fluid bearings? Maybe most of you can not tell what on earth this kind of bearing is. Now I will give you a basic idea about them.
Fluid bearings are bearings which solely support the bearing's loads on a thin layer of liquid or gas. Generally, it can be classified into hydrostatic bearings or dynamic bearings. Compared to other kinds of bearings, Fluid bearings can be used in high load, high speed or high precision applications with less noise and vibration. For example, hard disk drive motor fluid bearings are both quieter and cheaper than the ball bearings they replace.
But how do they work? Fluid bearings use a thin layer of liquid or gas fluid between the bearing faces, typically sealed around or under the rotating shaft. Of course, the different categories have their certain performances. But the operating principle is similar. Fluid bearings can be as simple as two smooth surfaces with seals to keep in the working fluid.
Compared to the mechanical bearings, fluid bearings have many advantages. Firstly, they are quieter and smoother. As is mentioned in the 2nd paragraph, they can work with less noise and vibration, thus, they are quieter and smoother than some kinds of bearings. Secondly, fluid bearings have very low friction. This advantage may lead to the little maintenance requirement. Moreover, fluid bearings can be relatively cheap compared to other bearings with a similar load rating. There is still a very important point. Fluid bearings have almost unlimited life which will definitely save more than the other bearings which may always break down at a certain time period.
Things are not always perfect. Fluid bearings have so many advantages, but they still carried with a lot of disadvantages. For example, you have to keep the fluid to operate the bearings. It is a challenge to protect the fluid bearings from fluid leakage. Besides, fluid bearings are less efficient than some kind of bearings and their power consumption is typically higher than other bearings like ball bearings.
