The Available Sources
The energy obtained from a source that cannot be consumed and could be reused is referred to as the renewable energy. Like the sources for non renewable energy, this form of energy is also obtained from natural sources. The natural resources such as the wind, sun, rain, tides, geothermal heat and even biomass could be employed to generate renewable energy. If you're wondering why the world is moving towards renewable energy generation, it is because of the fact that these sources could never be depleted from the earth. Due to their self-retaining natural characteristics, these sources could easily be replenished.
Forms of renewable energy
Nuclear power was the choice of the past; however the choice of the future is renewable energy. Many have started embracing the concept of renewable energy with zeal. However, their widespread usage would need some more time, expertise and funds. So, without further ado, here are some sources of renewable energy:
Wind energy
In all renewable energy resources, wind energy is definitely the most popular. In fact, around 30% of "clean" energy generated in our present time is produced from the movement of the wind. The forceful wind drives the energy turbines. The preferred areas for the installation of wind turbines are mainly high altitudes and offshore sites. These regions provide more strong and constant winds.
Hydro power
This is currently the most widely used resource for power generation. Being 800 times denser than air, hydro power could be employed to generate considerable amounts of energy. It's a resource that could easily be harnessed for power generation by different means, such as:
• Hydro electric energy from the installation of dams
• the energy from dam less hydro systems such as rivers and seas
• Ocean energy that drives power from marine current, ocean thermal energy conversion and tidal power.
Solar energy
This is the energy generated from solar radiation. Not all parts of the world have access to this resource because the sun doesn't shine evenly all around the world. The tropical zones of the world have maximum exposure to the sun; therefore they can utilize this resource to the best of their abilities. There are two categories for solar energy: active and passive. In the active form, the energy is captured through photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors.
Biomass
Biomass can include almost any organic matter that was originally a life form. Mostly, plants and vegetation are thought to be the biggest reserve of energy trapped from sunlight. Some plants are specifically grown to meet energy requirements, such as wood from forests which could be employed to isolate energy by burning them. Another approach could be the usage of plant remains or humus. Though some analysts don't consider biomass to be a clean resource, but it is under active research. Plus scientists are devising methods to make its combustion environment-friendly.
Biofuel
Fuel is in great demand to power vehicles and machinery. This ever-rising demand couldn't be met by the depleting conventional fuels. Biofuel, also known as bioethanol, could be overwhelmingly used as a substitute. Although this substance can be used as a fuel in its pure form, right now it's employed as a gasoline additive. As opposed to conventional fuel, the combustion on biofuel does not release green house gases as by-products. Therefore, it's a clean fuel that doesn't cause any harm to the environment.
The price of conventional fuels for power generation is constantly mounting, which is why the economy is stressed out. However, moving on to renewable resources as alternatives could be a life saving option.
