The internet term “troll” was almost surely derived from the fishing practice upon which a bait is dragged behind a moving boat in attempt to get as many bites as possible, not the fantastical monster.

Hence, you don’t “feed” a piece of bait. Saying “feed the troll” if this was where the term derived makes no sense. Wouldn’t “don’t take the bait” be more apropos.
