How Important Are Logos in Fashion

Companies are known to spend large amounts of money on creating brand names. Brand names and logos make it easier for people to remember the company and also help in creating brand loyalties. A logo is a symbol, emblem, icon sign or any graphical representation together with a unique setting and typeface to form a trademark or a commercial brand.

A brand that is widely known in the market gets brand recognition, which builds a critical mass of positive sentiment. This positive sentiment is commonly known as brand goodwill. Brand names in fashion business are as important, if not more, as in any other commercial venture. Even some countries like Spain, Italy and Turkey have logos for identification to market their country. And just like in any other industry, logos are extremely important in the fashion business.

Logos are official seals of a company that can be used almost anywhere - on the product itself, letter pads, marketing campaigns and more. The logo helps in instant recognition. A box of Kellogg's cereals on a supermarket's shelf can be recognized from far. In the fashion world, when you see the familiar spaced out lettering ‘GUCCI' in the same typeface, you know that the brand is indeed Gucci. Similarly when you see the small ‘c' and the large ‘K', Calvin Klein comes to mind almost instantaneously. Color in logos is important but in certain instances some other outstanding feature stands out more than color. The bite missing in Apple Inc.'s logo of an apple became so popular that even the subsequent change in color did not make a difference. All this is possible because logos of these corporations have been promoted by huge amounts spent on creating brand recognition.

In the fashion business, the role of logos has changed over time. Earlier the labels of most fashion designers or brands were not displayed prominently on the apparels or accessories that were sold. However, over time most fashion houses have realized that there is a need to display the brand and the logo prominently on the apparel, especially since a high quality, premium brand stands for certain qualities. The fashion designers now realize that consumers do not pay a premium for a brand only due to its superior fabric quality or stitching robustness but also for what the brand stands for. So while the Nike brand stands for a go-getter attitude, a Levi's jeans or t-shirt also sends a message that the wearer has a carefree and ‘don't-give-a-damn' attitude.

If you are starting your own clothing line, it would do you good if you first concentrate on quality control and try to give value for money to your buyers. This is extremely important since it is the quality of products that builds a positive perception about the brand. However, it is also important that you make some efforts to establish your brand of clothing right from the start. The efforts need not be loud and extensive to start with but they need to steadily increase as your products and apparels or accessories start getting recognized.
