Two Inches of Fun!
Last winter brought a lot of boredom here on Hess Lake until we discovered the sport of ice fishing. Every weekend we would wake up at 5 am or even stay up all night just to get in the car and go to Parsley’s (Local hunting and fishing store) and get the day started.
Crappie rigs and night crawlers is all we ever bought. For some odd and unapparent reason we all brought a lucky quarter just for good luck and it usually worked. This day started like all the rest except for what happened when we all got out on the ice.
Hour after hour no fish for anyone. We tried everything fly’s, wigglers, and we got so desperate we started resorting to pieces of our sandwiches. This winter was not like the rest. It was cold but and for some reason the ice was not as thick. Two inches was all it was but that couldn’t stop our drive to catch some fish.
Every now and then we’d here a crack or two but it wasn’t necessarily enough to scare us. I started to become worried because we started to here a lot of cracks. It settled down for a couple minutes and out of the blue my good friend Mitchell gets the hit of his life. We were all sitting down bored out of our minds and his pole shoots down on the ice. It was a pike. He grabbed his pole and tried to reel it in. a couple minutes later and his line hadn’t even snapped! He almost had it in and we here “CRACK”! We had two minutes to get off the ice or we were all going through. I screamed my loudest to Mitchell “Forget the pole, get of f the ice”! He refused he almost had it in. By this point I’m screaming at Mitchell as the ice has water coming out of our holes! Finally we had thirty seconds or we were all goners. He dropped his pole and dropped down on his belly like the rest of us. We all began crawling. We were all freaking out because every move made another crack! All I could think was “we are all dead”. I didn’t have the slightest thought we would make it out alive.
We finally got off the ice and kissed the ground and thanked god to be alive. It’s surprising to think of the risks you’ll take to just to get a fish when you could just go to the store and by one. I guess it’s all just the sport. I’d like to thank Hess Lake rentals for renting us the cottages and we’ll be back next winter. Until then Goodbye.
