An Important Type of Gears—Bevel Gear
Gears have various kinds, such as spur gears, helical gears, worm gears, bevel gears, etc. Among all these categories, the bevel gear is a rather important type. They are designed to connect with a gear mounted on an axis which may be positioned at any number of angles. Most often, they are mounted on shafts that are 90 degrees apart. Although other types of angles may be used like this as well, bevel gears are most classical. This is by contrast with other types of gears, which must generally be used either parallel to each other, or at right angles in some specialized cases.
According to the name of this product, we can see that the face of a bevel gear is angled. Generally, a bevel gear is conical in shape, with the teeth running along the side of the cone, and the angle of the sides can be varied, depending on the application for the gear.
The most familiar kinds of bevel gears have pitch angles of less than 90 degrees and therefore are cone-shaped. This type of bevel gear is called external gears because the gear teeth point outward. The pitch surfaces of meshed external bevel gears are coaxial with the gear shafts; the apexes of the two surfaces are at the point of intersection of the shaft axes. Oppositely, gears that have pitch angles of greater than ninety degrees have teeth that point inward is obviously called the internal bevel gears. As for those whose pitch angles are exactly 90 degrees with teeth that point outward parallel with the axis and resemble the points on a crown, they are called crown gears.
It is no doubt that bevel gears have a wide range of applications such as marine applications, automobiles, printing presses, power plants, railway track inspection machines, etc. Addition to these applications, they also have many simple applications. For example, they can be found in the workings of many garage doors. The gears used to turn the door are often set at right angles to each other, as can be seen upon close examination. Besides, they are also used in other types of doors and gates, such as sluice gates for dams which are often operated by a user's manipulation of a screw which turns a bevel gear to open or close the gate.
