So you caught all those big fish and now need to fillet them. One of many questions you may have is what kind of fillet knife should I use? With many different kinds, manufactures, and sizes of fillets knives available picking the right one to make the most out of your fishing experience is tough.

Lengths of fillet knives range from 6 inches to around 9 inches. Each of these lengths of knives is designed for certain types of fish so when buying a fishing fillet knife you'll want to consider what you'll be fishing. When picking a filleting knife you also want to look closely at handle and blade materials. Handles materials range from wood, derlin, and non-slip rubber materials, depending on your personal preferences and how you will be using the fillet knife some material are better than others. If you planning on using the knife everyday on a large quantity of fish a rubber handle tends to work best at keeping its grip, sustaining wear, and ease of cleaning.

Most blades are made of stainless steel because of its durability and ease of sharpening. Some blades will be coated will other metals such as titanium to give them added strength and increased durability. The most common blade length of fillet knife is the 6 inches.

6 Inch Fillet Knives

A 6 inch fillet knife is one of the most universal fillet knives on the market. This blade length works great when filleting trout, perch, bass, and other small-medium sized fish. These knives will work on any fish but if the blade length is too small it will become harder to clean the fish and you're results will mostly likely vary. This size of fillet knife is the one that most people are familiar with. The Buck Silver Creek Fillet Knife is my personal favorite knife in this category. With a blade length of 6 3/8" you're able to easily fillet trout and other kinds of fish, the rubber non-slip handle stays put so you don't have to worry about dropping it. Another great feature of this knife is that it is titanium coated for added durability and comes with a sheath for easy carrying.

9+ Inch Fillet Knives

These larger blade filleting knives work great on larger fish such as salmon and muskie. Flexibility becomes very important when getting into larger size filleting knives as a stiff blade will cause for problems when filleting. It can be hard to find lengths over 9 inches and most over that size are designed for commercial fishing applications and lose practicality in the consumer markets. One of my favorite knives in this category is the Ka-Bar 9 In. Fillet Knife. This knife features a great quality 440 stainless steel blade, plastic sheath, and a non-slip handle.

If you fish a lot of different sized fishes you might not be able to get just one fillet knife that meets your needs. Getting one small knife and on big knife to makes your filleting job easier for the avid fishermen.
