Prevent Backlashes (Surfcasting) - How?
So I went to the pier to test my new tackle. Also to learn how to use a multiplier reel. I got this second hand Abu Ambassadeur 6500CS Mag Elite spooled with 30Lb (0.33) Monofilament line. The first cast was terrible! The line broke in mid air in the middle of casting and I lost control of the spool! I ended up losing half spool of line! But it didn't cause me to lose my confidence. Instead, I tried again. I was only doing the ground cast. The next 10 to 15 casts were quite smooth, without backlash. The last cast, I don't know if I released the line too early or too late, the line was going out abnormally and I lost control of the spool. I don't know if the line has got something to do with my backlashes. But as I cast, I noticed that my line slackens quite a lot and therefore I got to stop the spool really fast to let the slack line get out before releasing more line. Please advice me on how to cast better. Thanks.
Hello there,
The spool in spinning faster than the line is going out. You need to learn you use your thumb to apply light pressure to control the speed of the spool. Also you need to experiment with the brake settings to get it adjusted to fit your personal casting speed/style. I spend a lot of time in the yard practicing casting. That gives you a place to work on getting the brakes adjusted and your thumbing technique.
These talk about the same thing and may help

For yard practice, you can buy a hookless practice plug. I just cut the hooks off an old plug and use it. Remember when you change the weight of your bait or plug, you may need to change your brake settings.
