Will an Okuma CLX-300L Classic Pro reel hold up well while tarpon fishing in the Fl. Keys?
Also please provide any 2 piece rod suggestions as i need to get it on an airplane.
Mmmm.....who knows?! I once owned an Okuma Epixor spinning reel, (and thought the new Okuma brand was going to be as good or even surpass the "big 4"; Shimano, Daiwa, Abu Garcia, Penn.)
I loved the reel until about 3 months later when the bail wouldn't completely close when engaged.
I greased it, baby-ed it; to NO avail. I never bought another Okuma Product again.
Anywho, looks like your reel has very little feedback on the internet. The only decent review I could find said the drag was questionable and the reel needed 2 more bearings, (at least), because it didn't cast so well- http://www.tacklefiles.net/castingreels/okuma_classic.php
After reading the review, I wouldn't count on the reel as a replacement for a Penn, Shimano or Garcia. Realize, when you're Tarpon fishing in the Keys, (off a bridge or Offshore) you don't get to pick the SIZE fish your going to catch......
Asking this Q is like asking- "I'm going to Africa and I want to go hunting. Will a 30/30 lever action be enough to take a Lion?" (The answer would be "No"- unless your an insanely good shot!)
Bottomline??- It may or may not hold up. By the 4th 60-70LB Tarpon the drag may go kaput. When you pay $40-$50 for a reel and decide to go fishing for heavy hitters like Tarpon or big Grouper you shouldn't be upset if the reel fails.....
