Recently purchased a new Penn Jigmaster 500M?
just recently purchased a new Penn Jigmaster 500M and was looking for a nice handle for it, maybe some after market modifications. Have done some research but haven't found anything that matches my reel model. are there any websites that provide good information and products for my reel??
There are tons of suitable parts for a Penn 500. Power handles are easy to find and there are different designs available. Personally, I prefer Accurate round knob handles like this http://www.charkbait.com/cs/csracComp.htm and handles similar to newer Penn 4/0's. Some people put oversized T-bar handles on their 500's. I think those are overly bulky for comfort.
Many people put Newell parts on Penn reels. Newell base and bars will reduce your reel's weight a little bit and those parts are very corrosion resistant. http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/rods-reels/169050-penn-500-newell-spool-bars-reel-seat-clamp.html Newell drag washers and aftermarket silicone drag washers will give you a smoother drag and they are worth your money and time. Newell aluminum spools are also quite nice. They are shaped a little differently and they fit a little tiny bit looser than Penn aluminum spools; Newell spools will increase your casting distance a little bit. You will be able to push your casting distance a little further by installing Newell graphite bearings. If you must change your reel's gears, Newell's high speed gears are recommended.
If you want to beef up your reel, Tiburon frames are very nice. http://www.charkbait.com/cs/csrTiburon.htm (scroll down the page). Accurate also makes one piece aluminum frames for Penn 500. If you want to match your side plates with the beefed up base, you'll need to find yourself some Accurate plates (called Accuplate) looking like this: http://www.getbentsportfishing.com/forum/tackle-101/2876-penn-jigmaster-500l-questi-n-2.html if you use aluminum side plates, there's no need for Newell graphite bearings. There are several colors available for aluminum side plates and base. You could mix colors for better contrast if you wish. But whatever you do, try to stay away from black base and plates; those will show scratches much easier than other colors.
You could turn your Penn 500 into a Penn 501 sized reel too. The decrease in size will make your reel cast a lot easier. You will be able to find all parts mentioned above for 501 conversion. There is also a way to increase your reel's max drag quite a bit at a cost. Your drags and gears will worn out noticeably sooner. I didn't have any side plates cracked on me this way but it is definitely possible. The reel did seem to become a little loose after extended use. I did beefed up my reels before I encounter any serious problems though. You could find instructions on how to increase your drag power if you search hard online.
