Drive The Ring Of Beara For Historical And Natural Wonders
Ireland's Beara Peninsula is a popular driving route in the country as it offers motorists the chance to appreciate the Emerald Isle's long history and rich culture.
Once you have bought motor insurance (click here) and checked your vehicle is in good working order you may be tempted to go on a driving trip to this region for a day trip or longer break, if you prefer. There are many sites located on the well-driven route, which weaves itself around the rocky outcropping of land. The peninsula is located in the south west of Ireland and falls into both County Kerry and County Cork.
Its north side looks out over the stretching Kenmare river, while its southern region is bordered by Bantry Bay. Drivers taking the Ring of Beara route can take in these visual delights and many others studding the land. Leaving from the County Kerry village of Kenmare, many motorists decide to take the Healy Pass in order to cross the peninsula, while getting impressive views of the Caha Mountain range.
Following this, a common stopping off point for day-trippers on the south side is Adrigole village. Here you can take a look at a stunning waterfall that is believed to be one of Ireland's highest, while the soaring peak of Hungry Hill entrances many. Drivers are free to carry on towards Castletownbere, where a large range of sporting activities are available for motorists wishing to stretch their legs and get some fresh air. Culture fans may like to pay the nearby Dunboy Castle a visit to wander around the 17th Century grounds.
Both Bere Island and Dursey Island can be explored from this region of the penisula, with the former dotted with artefacts from military bases, while the latter offers a sedate atmosphere. Turning back towards Kenmare and the mainland, the route borders the north coast of the outcropping, with wide views of Coulagh Bay being enjoyed by many motorists. The picturesque village of Eyeries lies along this road, which residents have brightened by painting their homes in eye-catching colours.
If you fancy trying to catch some fresh fish then you can take a detour to Ardgroom, where you may like to reel in some trout. The Caha Mountains soar impressively on the right and provide a beautiful backdrop to the route, which continues to the village of Lauragh. The Healy Pass can be taken for a second time, allowing you to complete the circular route and end your journey at Glengarriff if you wish.
