What rod and reel for bottom bashing?
Hi. I have just got into deep offshore fishing lately recently and being new all this, I have some questions about the gear needed. Any input is much needed!!!
I am dead set wanting to get a spinning reel setup. Will mostly be bottom bashing in max 70 metres of water with max 8-10oz of snapper lead (deep) and 20-30 metres with 3-4oz of snapper lead (shallow).
Planning to get a Shimano Saragosa 8000 (30lb braid) with a Shimano Triton Sportfish 10-15kg 6ft but I am undecided whether to get a 10-15kg or 15-24kg rod.
1. In general, will the 10-15kg be suitable with 8-10oz of weight (bends too much) or should I get the 15-24kg rod?
2. If I will be needing the 15-24kg rod, should I be getting the bigger Saragosa 18000?
ATM I a leaning towards the lighter setup as most probably the usual fish will be around max 10kg.
Any help is much needed!!!
Reel - Reels that pack a little extra power with high gear ratio is recommended. 70m is only a little more than 75 yards, so conventional reels aren't absolutely necessary yet. But, conventional reels will make your life easier in this case because conventional reels got more cranking power; less efforts are required to retrieve your rig/fish from that depth. Recommended reels - Daiwa SL20SH, Daiwa SL30SH and Penn 525 Mag.
Rod - Medium light to medium action saltwater rod with a stiff body and a soft, sensitive tip. You could catch fish that are smaller than your bait and fish that are longer than your leg on the exact same rig when bottom fishing. You want the soft, sensitive tip to feel lighter bites. You'll need that stiff body to yank larger one up.
Line - Braided lines will work very nicely for bottom fishing. 30 pound test braided line is good enough for that kind of depth.
Sinkers - Your choice of weight range sounds right. However, I'll adjust the weight of the sinker according to the current and the wave instead of the depth. Also, I'll use sinkers that are heavier than necessary. Let heavy sinker shoot straight to the bottom and kick up a cloud of sand/mud. The noise and the cloud of sand/mud will help attract fish; the noise will make fish look and the cloud will look like small fish that was hidden in the sand/mud fleeing/feeding.
PS: "Bottom bashing" sounds a little... kinky. LOL
