Wine Investment Growing In Popularity In China
Wine investment turns out to be one of the most successful and profitable investments on the market. The Fine Wine Investables Index Liv-ex gained 24% last year due to increased interest from Chinese buyers. There is an explanation to it - Russia seems to be out of the wine market for the moment, America has a big demand, but it is not growing very fast and Europe seems flat. China on the other hand is the big story at the moment. The collectors over there are more interested in brands than vintage wine. The leading wine right now is Château Lafite and it sells twice the value of same quality wines from Château Mouton, Château Latour and Château Margaux. This is because Châteaux Lafite started first in the market for luxury wines – an importer brought some stocks to China over 15 years ago. Also the name "Lafite" is very well translated in Chinese and has been well established with the Chinese government officials – rumour has it that if one wants to seal a deal – Lafite should be served. To be successful in making money form wine, the investor should be able to catch the next big wave and for China this certainly means the next Lafite on the market. The prognosis for this year is very interesting because 2010 in Bordeaux happened to be with smaller crops but with extremely high quality. The year 2009 was pronounced to be one of the best vintages and prices were very high, almost double of best vintages before that year. The vintages 2000, 2003, and 2005 were also rated extremely high – this is most likely due to improved vineyard practices and technology. Apart from buying wine form the best producer during a successful vintage year, the investor should look at some other promising options too. Château Mouton Rothschild from Pauillac and a nearby Château Lafite is trading very actively right now. It is very different form the Lafite – more masculine and rich. It trades for about 40-50% of the value of Lafite. 10-15% behind is Château Latour and after that are Cheval Blanc, Margaux and Haut Brion wines. Château Petrus and Lafleur are Right Bank wines and are worth investing in if there is an opportunity, since they produce amazing wines but in small quantities. Second wines, product of the top producers are also a very interesting area for investment. Château Lafite also has such a wine made from Carruades de Lafite and additional vineyards. Currently it is trading at 3.800 pounds per case and this really is too high of a price for that quality, but this is Chinese driven thing. Mouton Rothschild is also gaining value in the circles of wine investment.
