The Different Types of Saltwater Fishing Lines
When determining which saltwater fishing line to use for the type of fishing you will be doing,there are a few things you must consider. Will you be using it to cast lures with a spinning rod? Or maybe be using a revolving spool reel from a boat over a reef, fishing bait.If using a spinning rod for casting lures , 12 to 15 pound test will get you in the game,and will cast much better than say,20 or 30 pound test.If fishing around structure,where break-offs can occure you will want to use the heavier pound tests.
There are four types of lines that are available today: Braid, fusion, Fluorocarbon, and the most used Monofilament, the latter being the cheapest..
Monofilament is a favorite with saltwater anglers .Availability, price, color,available pound test, and also familiarity makes this line so popular.It can be susceptible to cut-offs and nicks from toothy critters,but if you use a wire or fluorocarbon leader,and cut and retie when you spot abrasion,it is a very good line.Stretching can be a negative with mono,but as long as your aware of the fact you can adjust.
Braid line,made of nylon,is stronger and thinner than mono and is also more abrasive resistant.Braid line has limited stretch,and for that reason it is to limp for casting. There are specific knots to keep the braid from stranding and becoming weak.If the braid strands before your knot,cut and retie.
Fusion is a braid line,that has the microfiber fused together,which prevents the braid from stranding.Fusion is easier to cast than braid,but not as good as mono for casting.Having limited stretch ability,fusion is a good line for setting the hook on a big fish.
The latest developement in fish line is fluorocarbon.This line is made by bonding Polymer of fluoride to carbon.Being the most technically advanced of all the types fishing line,there are advantages to using this line.Fluorocarbon is invisible when in the water,but visible out of the water.Its not affected by sunlight ,it has low stretch,and it is sensitive.Its a good line if you want your lures to run deeper.
