The Joy of Ice Fishing
Ice fishing is an enjoyable winter pastime and a it can be great family sport, particularly for youngsters. It's a unique form of fishing that is gathering popularity in many areas. It is extremely common here in New England, and many other northern regions. Many species of game fish can be caught through the ice. Bass, trout, northern pike, pickerel, perch, walleyes and catfish are commonly sought. In all areas ice fishing is regulated by state or province fishing authorities so all license, fish limits and other regulations should be followed..
Ice fishing is really as much about companionship and getting out of the house in the cold winter season as it is about catching fish. For purists, ice fishing is really as simple as making a hole, dropping down a line and waiting for the fish to bite. Some folks require a handful of luxuries and they will set up ice houses (known as shanties) and bring along grills, stoves chairs, etc. While an ice house is not needed pending time in these structures can protect you from the cold and keep you occupied while waiting for the fish to bite. Seasoned ice fishermen frequently assemble elaborate shanties and outfit these with high-tech gear, including depth finders and under the water cameras, to assist them in their quest for fish.
Ice fishing safety is extremely important of course. The ice should be sufficiently thick and strong. Stay away from inlet and outlet structure locations. We suggest not fishing by yourself and always take basic safety guidelines. When done properly the potential for an accident is very slight but falling through unsafe ice or having a slip and fall accident can be extremely dangerous so make sure you are always cautious when out on the ice.
A lot of ice fishing is done with a form of fish trap known as a tip-up. Standard wooden tip-ups involve two attached wooden pieces with an upright center wood rod. The center piece has a fishing reel which sits under the water level and is loaded with braided ice fishing line plus a monofiliment leader and a baited hook. Live bait minnows such as shiners are commonly used. The reel is put under the water level to prevent it from freezing. A wire trip device leading from the reel holds a small red or orange flag and once a fish hits the bait and the reel rotates the flag pops up and alerts the fishermen. This is when the fish may get caught or it might get away. Wood tip-up models are usually the most cost-effective although more elaborate types are available as well. Using tip-ups for ice fishing has long been part of ice fishing history, going back a long time in history. It is believed that this form of fish trap was used by early Native Americans who ice fished for food. This would make tip-ups among the very first types of ice fishing tackle.
Fifty years ago, along with his "hard water" angling gear, the only real device an ice fisherman needed was an axe to chop a hole in the ice. Nowadays products have advanced significantly. Gas powered augers are the norm while hand held augers and ice chipping chisels are also used. Most ice fishermen have some type of sled to use to drag all their equipment across the frozen lake to their favorite fishing location. This greatly adds to the convenience and a properly supplied ice sled will make your day on the ice that much more enjoyable. The basic equipment listed in this article is not always required however it can make your fishing a bit more pleasurable and productive. Fishing out on the ice isn't for everyone but for those who enjoy getting out on a winter's day it can be a wonderful and safe activity.
