is it uncommon to use a Med. Hvy. rod when shore casting for coho salmon? (8-20lb)?
Im trying to decide which rod to take with me to Alaska. Im going for coho. My med hvy rod is for 12-25lb mono and my med rod is 6-15lb mono. I am going to use 20lb braided line (6lb diameter) and I thought the med hvy rod might look a little silly casting in that little alaskan river since its 8 feet long, although I also dont want to break my rod if I catch a 20 pounder and Im using a rod only rated for 15lbs. Can anyone help me out with this one? Do I really need all that rod for these fish? (Ill be using mainly 7/8oz spoons)
the braided line is necessary in order to put 20/30lp test on a reel that is only rated for 6-8lb mono. Otherwise you have to have a HUGE reel and THICK line. and the new super lines have the advantages of the braided lines without all the problems. Stren's Sonic braid is supposed to be amazing with a 7' fluorocarbon leader
I fish for Carp & use a medium-action 7' spinning rod, and I commonly catch similar sized fish as you. It holds up well. I use 12-pound Berkley Big Game on the reel and it handles all the big 'ens.
