How To Choose The Best Canoe or Kayak

Kayaking or canoeing down a river can be a great way to enjoy both the water and the outdoors without having to hear the noise of an outboard motor running.  It's also a fun family activity for the entire family that really doesn't cost a lot of money to do.  Before purchasing either model of watercraft here are a few things to consider before making a big purchase.

Canoes narrow longer shaped boats that require very little force to slice through the water.  A single person with a paddle is all that is needed unless a strong exists.  As canoes can hold several people less effort is required if everybody is helping out with their paddle.  While canoes were originally build from wood modern day canoes are constructed from aluminum, fiberglass, and high impact plastic and are now much lighter and easier to maintain.  After owning both aluminum and plastic my preference is plastic as it is very durable, quieter, and there are no rivets to come loose and leak.  Some plastic canoes also feature a raised floor which helps to keep contents drier.  Even in colder temperatures these new plastic canoes remain flexible enough not to crack even when striking rocks.

Kayaks are very similar to the design and size of canoes and can be used in similar conditions.  Typically kayaks are designed for a single person with cockpit located close to the middle of the watercraft.  Kayaks are usually made from some type of composite material such as fiberglass, Kevlar, and even high impact plastics   In addition to the typical rigid kayak inflatable's are also available and provide the maximum portability along with very little storage space being needed when not in use.  Also double ended paddles are very common among kayakers.

In comparing canoes and kayaks canoes are the best option to get friends and family involved along with providing the greatest amount of space for coolers and even tents for overnight trips.  Kayaks are really best suited for the thrill seeker who wants to travel down faster white waters.  Two person kayaks are available but keep in mind canoes can be sized to accommodate up to 4 adults.

When choosing either model make sure the weight rating of the craft is more than enough to accommodate the load you plan on.  Remember this load rating includes passenger weight also, not just the extra weight of a cooler for example.  Next make sure you have a means to haul the watercraft mainly that it's not to long.
