Essential Guidelines for Where to Catch Trout
Trout fishing is definitely a fun and relaxing way to spend your time, but being able to successfully catch these sneaky fish can make the experience that much more exciting. In order to be a successful trout angler, one of the most important things to know is where to catch trout.
This is the starting point for becoming a skilled fisherman because after all, you can know all of the bait and casting techniques you want, but if you are fishing in the wrong areas then it will make things much more challenging. In this article we will identify some of the most common types of water bodies that trout inhabit, and from there we will explore why they are there and how exactly to find them. As you will see or may already know, most trout are found in freshwater, but some can be found in saltwater too. We'll talk about why that is as well.
Rivers
River fishing is one of the best ways, if not the best way, to catch trout. They absolutely love rivers because the rocks and fast-moving water provide an oxygen-rich environment. Typically you will see trout in colder rivers or streams, but that doesn't mean you won't find them in warmer water. If you are trout fishing in a warm river then you will probably have more success where the current is slightly stronger since fast-moving water contains more dissolved oxygen than slow-moving or still water.
Lakes
Lake Trout are abundant and widespread across many places in the world. As with trout in other types of water, lake trout have become more plentiful as lakes are being stocked with farm-raised fish. This allows for the use of live bait in more areas, which is a great way to fish in lakes. Lake Trout are generally found in cooler lakes since they love cold water. However, it is not uncommon to see these fish in the deep sections of warmer lakes in the summertime. Since lakes contain still water for the most part, most Lake Trout will migrate to the cooler parts of the lake in order to satisfy their strong necessity for dissolved oxygen. Keep this in mind when trout fishing in lakes because you can definitely find them, but you may have to get your bait deep enough to reach them.
Mountain Springs
Trout love mountain springs as well because they tend to be cooler. They will always have an affinity for cold water, so it's a safe bet that you will find them in areas like mountain springs. These springs provide a cold environment with a mixture of slow and fast-moving water with various depths, so trout can have more options. If the spring has deep, slow-moving water then you can probably find them hiding near the bottom where the water temperature is colder. However, they also love the areas where the current changes slightly, especially if the water is a little warmer.
Oceans
Some trout inhabit saltwater areas for most of their lives and only go to freshwater for spawning. They are a type of Brown Trout commonly called Sea Trout. The only difference between the two is that the regular Browns stay in freshwater all of their lives. Sea Trout can mainly be found off the coast of Europe and Asia, but you can definitely find them in other parts of the world as well. Techniques for catching this type of fish are similar to lake fishing. Trolling and fly fishing are commonly used methods for reeling in these saltwater trout.
