Basic methods of Trout Lake Fishing
Trout lake fishing has some basic difference compared to trout lake fishing. Lakes have deeper and more silent water compared to rivers. Rivers with streams is most suitable for the Brown trout, while lakes are good for the Lake trout.
The lake trout is probably the biggest trout among other trout species. The biggest lake trout ever caught weighed 102 pounds, hooked at Lake Athabsca, Saketchewan in 1961. Also known as lakers, the lake trout has many other names such as fat, char, gray trout, humper, landlocked salmon and paperbelly.
Important information that you should obtain to be successful in lake fishing is about the weather. Lake trout are sensitive to sunlight, condition of the water and sky clarity. The best condition to catch them is in early morning up to 10:30 am, where the water surface is dead calm with a clear sky above.
Another important info is about the bottom of the lake. You should find the bottom, since your line should get to it. Just letting your line out without hitting the bottom will be a failure.
Please bear in mind that trout can be found at different levels of depth along the year. They can be found at the surface in early spring just after ice out, but with the increasing temperature of water from early spring to summer, they are going to stay deeper and deeper. Summer supposed to be the hardest time to catch lake trout.
There are two basic trout lake fishing; jigging and trolling
Jigging is a way of fishing using a jig, which is a kind of fishing lure with a lead sinker and a hook attached to it then covered by a sort of soft body that may attract the trout. It is designed to create a typical jumping or jerking motion, which imitates the motion of an injured bait fish.
You may as well create this jumping motion by raising and lowering your rod or waving it from side to side. Other things you can do to create an irregular motion is altering your rod height and intervals of your waving. Do not be too quick with your pace, be patient. Be sure to use a rod that is sensitive enough to feel a strike
Jigging can be performed in shallow waters. But since the lake trout do not stay often near the shore, jigging from a boat will provide you with greater success to catch lake trout.
Trolling is slowly towing your line trough deep waters from a boat. You can also do trolling in shallow waters by walking along the shore line, but of course you should check whether you can do this.
Trolling from a boat is more feasible. You can use a motorized boat with a silencer to avoid the trout frightened away. Prior to motorized boat trolling, you should check with the local state's department of natural resources whether you need a permit or not. Motorized trolling is prohibited in some states.
Your tackle should include; a rod which should meet your requirement, a spinning reel or just a bait caster, a sinker to maintain depth, a light lure or trolling spoon to attached a live minnow and a downrigger to attach your rod to the boat.
As the boat starts to move slowly, let out the line for several feet at a time, slowly and carefully until you feel the sinker hit the bottom of the lake. Using a depth finder will be more practical.
