The Best Live Trap Baits for All Animals

If you're looking for a humane way to trap a nuisance animal, you need a live trap. Live traps allow you to catch an unwanted animal without killing or hurting it, which allows you to then turn it over to animal control or release it away from your property. To catch an animal, you must first start with the proper trap for it's species. But having the proper collapsible live trap is not enough. Having the right bait in your trap is the main thing that ensures you will catch the specific animal that is causing trouble around your home.

Squirrels are often able to live peaceably with humans, but when they build a nest in your attic or are trapped under your home, you will need a live trap to safely capture them. Bait a trap for squirrels with peanut butter, dry and uncooked oatmeal, sunflower seeds, or bread. Don't put too much in the trap, and don't forget to change out the bait if it dries out or spoils. A squirrel won't enter a trap for spoiled peanut butter, unless they are very desperate for food.

Raccoons are omnivores, and eat almost any kind of food. Fish, crisp and freshly cooked bacon, and marshmellows are all the most recommended baits for a live trap. These foods smell strongly enough to the raccoon to lure them in from far away. Avoid handling either the bait or the trap without gloves on your hands, or your smell will keep away the animal you're trying to catch. A ground hog is best caught with corn, peas, apples, or lettuce.

Rats can be lured in with cheese, of course, but grains such as oatmeal or barley will work just as well. Peanut butter and sandwich meats also work for rodents. Chipmunks will eat almost any grain, including sunflower seeds and popcorn. Skunks are carnivores. Meat baits, like chicken livers or entrails, or a can of tuna fish are the best lures. To catch a rabbit, freshly chopped vegetables including lettuce and carrots work well. Apples, cabbage, and even bread work too.

Finally, catching a fox can be tricky, unless you use special baits. Chicken entrails sometimes work, but live mice from a pet store or specially prepared fox baits are often the only lure to bring a fox into a trap. Live mice can be too much of a hassle for many homeowners, but it is one of the few baits that work for the intelligent fox.
