How to Avoid a Trap in Online Poker
Bad beats happen to everyone, no matter how airtight your strategy is, but true bad beats are few and far between. A lot of amateurs like to write their poor choices off as bad beats when what really went down was a good trap. You can avoid these devastating (and embarrassing) losses by learning to recognize the most common trap scenarios.
Play The Right Hands
When you're playing weak hands, you're pretty much asking to be trapped. In these situations, a lot of times your opponent is simply protecting their better hand, and a real trap hasn't even been orchestrated. If you play through the river on nothing, hoping to get a lucky draw, then losing shouldn't be a surprise. The moral to the story is: don't make yourself vulnerable by betting when you shouldn't.
Learn To Fold From The Blind Positions
A lot of players sitting in the blind positions feel like they have to see the flop. While it's fine to limp into the flop, if you don't have a good hand to start with then don't let your small mandatory bet drag you into calling something you shouldn't. This is especially true when several other players are already in the hand; if you always see the flop when you're sitting in a blind position, you're going to come across as a calling station, and your opponents will likely make you pay for future flops.
Learn To Fold After The Flop
This is true regardless of where you're sitting at the table. If you had a promising starting hand, but the flop didn't help it, then it's time to consider folding. If you can check your way into the turn then so be it, but don't call another player's strong bet with nothing to back it up.
Don't Chase Aces
A lot of hands are won with just a pair, and since Aces are the top pair they seem like a worthwhile hand to pursue. That said, if all you've got is an Ace and a baby and the rest of the table is betting hard you've got no business staying in the hand.
Letting Go Of Awesome Hole Cards
Getting a really awesome pair of hole cards is so rare that a lot of players feel determined to ride that hand all the way through to the showdown. It's important to remember that starting hands are just that – the start of your hand. You've got to look at the writing on the wall; if the board isn't helping you and other players are betting aggressively, then chances are they've already outdrawn you.
Avoid Getting Pot Committed
Unfortunately some players have trouble folding after their first bet, and from there on out letting go of what you've already put in the pot can be hard, but if you don't have the nuts then you have no business betting like you do. While betting is a crucial part of poker strategy, if you make it to the showdown without the cards to win it then you're just going to look and feel like a fool. Every bet you make should be considered independently from that point in the hand; forget about what you've already bet, and if all signs are suggesting that you're already beat then by all means cut your losses and fold.
Don't Be The Bluff Police
We've all suspected that a fellow opponent was bluffing at one point, and there's nothing more satisfying than calling a bluff, but calling what you think is a bluff with a bluff of your own is crazy. It's quite common for clever players to underbet a strong hand early on hoping someone will take the bait and build the pot for them; don't be that player!
