Surfing Sea

Beginning to surf?

Surfing is not just a sport, it can change your life completely, making you re-assess your priorities and values. Few other sports can have such a profound effect on the human soul as surfing and so it is no surprise that many people aim to learn the skills required to enjoy the power of the waves and the freedom that surfing brings.

Surf schools can give you a good introduction to surfing, but at some point you will have to buy you own board and get out on the water for yourself, with no-one telling you what to do and when, with no mental support. Don't do this on your own if you can help it, but recognise that surfing with your friends is not the same as surfing with a school.

The learning process is important as surfing, in common with all rewarding activities, can be extremely dangerous, especially if you try to do too much too early. The sea is not a tame location, if it was we wouldn't be there, and even the most placid sea can hide dangers that you must respect. Being a strong swimmer is essential and you must practice swimming in the sea as it is nothing like a swimming pool. Before deciding on a break on which to practise your surf technique be sure to check with local surfers and surf shops of the currents, tides and possible rips and rocks that might put you in trouble. Connecting with the local surf community is also a good way to let people know where you are and what experience level you are at, If you approach the community with respect, they will show you respect and probably look after you too.

You next concern is Kit. At the very least you need a board. Don't be tempted to go out and buy the latest and greatest radical shortboard, or the biggest longboard you can find either. Until you find your own groove, your perfect position in the range of surf styles you should stay neutral and explore your own style as you gain in skill. Shore.co.uk stock a wide range of boards suitable for beginners, from the Stormblade Soft Surfboards to the Bic and NSP Funboard ranges. These middle ground boards are favoured by surf schools and are also good for a beginner wishing to develop further. Surfboards are not cheap but it is worth taking advice when purchasing and to keep in mind the rewards of learning these skills.

You will also need at least a wetsuit vest to keep your body warm. If you are surfing in Britain it is likely that you will need a full length wetsuit to stave off the cold.

Finally you are ready to get out there and enjoy the power of the waves and the balance of your board. Always remember to tell someone where you are surfing and preferably surf with a group and make sure that at least some of the group are on the beach while the rest of you are out in the break, that way if anything unexpected happens help will arrive quickly.

Shore.co.uk can supply all the kit you need to enjoy Surfing and our staff can give you the advice you need to ensure that your kit is up to requirements and to give you tips and tricks to further develop your skill.
