How To Strip And Crimp Wires

Stripping and crimping automotive wiring is a relatively simple process. It can be done without any major investment in special tools. The job is most easily done using wire crimping pliers, which are available at any auto parts store and most hardware stores. The price of this tool varies, depending on the quality, from about $5 to $15. It has a sharp cutter, and a series of holes sized progressively upward. It also has three larger holes that are used to do the crimping portion of the operation. It is split down the middle, with the holes open when the handles are open. When the wire is inserted into the proper size hole and the handles are squeezed, the insulation is cut, but not the wire itself.

Simply cut the wire with the cutting attachment then find the proper size hole in the crimping portion of the pliers. Strip approximately 1/4" of insulation from the end of the wire. Then, slip the connector to be used over the bare wire. Next, insert thins connector into the larger holes of the crimping pliers, and squeeze the handles. You have now successfully cut and crimped a car wire!

If wire crimping pliers are not available, conventional diagonal cutters may be substituted for handling vehicle wiring. The cutting of the wire is done in the same manner as crimping pliers, but the stripping and crimping operations are slightly different. Since there are no pre-formed holes, you have to use caution so as not to cut through the metal wire as you strip off the insulation. Crimping is a little easier, but still requires caution, as it is possible to ruin the terminal. This method should only be used by someone who has a familiarity with the tool.
