Zane Grey-The Master Writer of the Wild West Novels
The Wild West was the age of legends. It is a period that has a romantic connotation and leaves a deep impression. The period under reference is just after the Civil War in 1865.
Most of these legends and the Wild West in particular were put on paper with his pen by a writer called Zane Grey. Now after a lapse of a great amount of time one can safely conclude that Zane Grey was something special and no one really matches him. Zane Grey brought alive the period of bandits, rustlers and Indians on one Side and the law men like the Texas Rangers on the other side.
Zane lived from 1872 -1939 and this period saw him turn out a prodigious number of books and stories on the Wild West. In his books Zane Grey created gun fighters who were strong and righteous and the women beautiful. In fact he idealized the image of the rugged old west.
Zane is credited with almost 100 books which sold over 40 million copies and thus he became the first millionaire writer. From 1917-26, Zane Grey was in the best seller list ten times.
Zane Grey also had a tremendous impact on the film world. A lot many of his books were the inspiration many Hollywood films. He also started his own production company, which he later sold. Two of his most famous books ‘the lone star ranger ‘ and ‘king of the royal mounted ‘ inspired a whole lot of serials and established Zane Grey as a writer par excellence.
Zane grey was no ordinary writer as can be seen from the fact that even after his death almost 30 of his books were published posthumously.
The significance of Zane Grey lies in the fact that he brought the Wild West alive for all time to come. He was certainly a gifted writer who will forever be remembered as a master writer.
